    Public Policy and Expenditure: Some recent studies is the title of this years Annual CBPS Seminar. It will be held at The Atria Hotel and is a two day seminar on 4 and 5 December starting at 10 a.m. It starts with the release of our work on ‘Public Expenditure on Children in Karnataka’ by Prof. Shantha Sinha. Presentations of research studies undertaken by CBPS staff in the last year will be followed by discussions with eminent administrators and academics serving as discussants.

    As part of the staff development exercise for 2014-15, CBPS is organising a writing workshop on 11th and 12th November 2014. Prof.S.Saraswathi will facilitate the same. The capacity building exercise will help staff crystallize their research ideas and write a publish-worthy article for a journal of their choice.

    On October 1, CBPS organised a day-long meeting with project partners Mahila Samakhya , Karnataka; IFMR-LEAD , and Educational Resource Unit to feed into the preparation of tools for the baseline survey for the GrOW project titled Empowering women through collectives: A randomized study of the Mahila Samakhya program . In addition, the sample villages, timelines and deliverables from various partners, and other issues requiring clarification were discussed, making for a productive meeting.

    The 2014 staff retreat was to Coonoor and nearby places. From 26th - 29th September the team, along with family members of staff, took a break to unwind and relax at a home-stay nestled in a tea-estate in Coonoor. A halt en-route for a safari at Bandipur, and in Ooty on the way back, made it all the more fun.

    Puja represented CBPS at a valuable networking opportunity to learn about ODL in other countries. The Annual General Meeting of Commonwealth Open Schooling Association (COMOSA) held in Dhaka, Bangladesh from September 30 to October 3, 2014 was organised by Commonwealth of Learning (COL), Vancouver. The meeting was preceded by workshops on The Big Picture Learning model as well as Theory of Change, During the meeting, the next six-year plan for each chapter (Asia, Africa, Pacific and Caribbean) was discussed and the COMOSA website was launched.     Mrs. Frances J. Ferreira, Education Specialist, Open Schooling, COL and Member, Advisory Committee of the ongoing CBPS study on Open & Distance Learning graciously accepted an invitation to interact with the study team on 24 September, during her visit to India. The interaction allowed for a stock-taking of the ground covered so far, and for vital inputs, clarifications and perspective to be gained.

    CBPS conducted an Orientation Programme on Urban Finances and Local Governance for Sri Lankan elected representatives of local governments and provincial councils. In connection to this, CBPS hosted a 20 member delegation from Sri Lanka from 14-21 September, in collaboration with The Asia Foundation, Colombo.

    Global Development Network announced the winners of its 2013 round of the Global Research Competition recently. The competition received over 131 cross-country/inter-regional team applications. After a highly competitive selection process, Sambhu Singh Rathi and Claire Vermaak of South Africa were jointly awarded the grant in the thematic area Inclusive and Sustainable Growth for their proposed research on The impacts of rural electrification on labour market outcomes in developing countries: Evidence from India and South Africa.
