    Professor Vinod Vyasulu was at the Institute of Public Health on June 9, for a seminar on The Unified Health System in Brazil. It served to help understand the way the Brazilian Health System has been organised; how it is managed and financed; and draw out lessons for India. His session was part of the Public Seminar Series and was well appreciated by the researchers.

    The Annual Poornima Vyasulu memorial lecture on Development & Gender will be delivered tomorrow, 8 May 2014. Srilatha Batliwala, Scholar Associate with the Association for Women’s Rights in Development (AWID) and independent researcher is the speaker this year. Ms. Sandhya Rao, a known name among those working on human rights and women’s issues will chair the session. The lecture is scheduled for 6 p.m at the Manorama Hall, Indian Institute of World Culture. All are invited.

    The CBPS Annual Endowment Lecture on Budgets this year was by Professor Rajeev Gowda from IIM Bangalore. He spoke on Political Economy of Budgets - a topic very relevant in view of the ongoing general elections and the fact that the fall budget for this year at the national level is yet to come out. The event took place on the 29th of April 2014 at Manorama Hall, Indian Institute of World Culture.

    Mr. Srinivas participated in a three-day conference from 26-28 March 2014 on Impact Evaluation of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme organised by Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research, Mumbai in collaboration with Institute of Food Policy Research, Cornell University, USA, and International Initiative for Impact Evaluation. He presented a paper on a study conducted by CBPS for Government of Karnataka on the Role of MNREGA in Improving Land Productivity.

    Ms. Neha Ghatak represented CBPS at a three-day seminar on Addressing Equity Issues in Education at India Habitat Centre, New Delhi on 29-31 January, 2014. She shared findings and insights from research studies undertaken by CBPS on the RTE in the session themed Getting to the Roots: What are the barriers towards achieving equity in our education system? Examining key barriers in the session sub-theme in wider educational Institutions and systems was at the core of her engagement.

    CBPS is organising a half a day seminar on Public Expenditure on Children in Karnataka at Hotel Capitol in Bangalore on 24th January, 2014, National Girl Child Day. We are extremely happy that Smt. Umashree, Minister for Women and Child Development in Karnataka has agreed to inaugurate this seminar and noted social scientist and philosopher, Dr. Shobha Raghuram has agreed to give the keynote address.

    As part of the Effective School Management and Leadership Programme for Principals and senior administrators of schools affiliated with CBSE.TERI Southern Regional Centre is organising a training in Bangalore. Around 20 Principals/ Vice-Principals/ Senior Administrators and Senior Teachers from Government and Private Schools are participating in the 5-day training programme. Sandhya will be resource person for the session on Financial Management with reference to budget and accountancy in connection to the same on 10 December.

    Global Development Network (GDN) and the Institute of Rural Management Anand (IRMA) are co-hosting a Policy Dialogue titled Panchayati Raj, Political Empowerment and Service Delivery in New Delhi on 28th November. The full day discussions will draw from the research findings of the recently concluded GDN-Global Research Project Varieties of Governance: Effective Public Service Delivery and research undertaken in the area by scholars at IRMA, and other research centres, including CBPS. Hon. Minister Jairam Ramesh, Ministry of Rural Development, GoI, will give the keynote address.

    Centre for Budget and Governance Accountability organised a conference on Taxation Policies and Development: Challenges and Emerging Opportunities with a focus on revenue mobilisation efforts in the last decade in developing countries, on Nov 25-26 in New Delhi. Prof. Vinod was one of the panelists on the theme Adequacy of Public Resources for Development in the Indian Context . Sambhu also represented CBPS at the event.
