We are pleased to invite you to an upcoming public lecture by Professor Mary E. John, titled Sex Selection and the Family in Contemporary India, to be held on Wednesday, 11 June 2025, at the Infosys Science Foundation Auditorium, Jayanagar, Bengaluru.
Over the past few decades, the Indian family has undergone profound transformations. However, these shifts are rarely acknowledged or publicly discussed. In this lecture, Professor Mary E. John will examine contemporary family-building practices in India, focusing on how couples today plan their families, particularly in the context of gender.
The lecture will be delivered in English, followed by a summary in Kannada and an open Q&A.
Held in memory of our founding member Poornima Vyasulu, this memorial lecture is a space for shared learning and critical dialogue.

11 ಜೂನ್ 2025 ಬುಧವಾರದಂದು ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಜಯನಗರದ ಇನ್ಫೋಸಿಸ್ ಸೈನ್ಸ್ ಫೌಂಡೇಶನ್ ಆಡಿಟೋರಿಯಂನಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆಯಲಿರುವ ಪ್ರೊಫೆಸರ್ ಮೇರಿ ಇ ಜಾನ್ ಅವರ ಸಾರ್ವಜನಿಕ ಉಪನ್ಯಾಸಕ್ಕೆ ನಿಮ್ಮನ್ನು ಆಹ್ವಾನಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದೇವೆ.
ಕಳೆದ ಕೆಲವು ದಶಕಗಳಲ್ಲಿ, “ಭಾರತೀಯ ಕುಟುಂಬ” ಎಂಬ ಪರಿಕಲ್ಪನೆಯು ಆಳವಾದ ರೂಪಾಂತರಗಳಿಗೆ ಒಳಗಾಗಿದೆ. ಆದರೆ, ಈ ಬದಲಾವಣೆಗಳನ್ನು ಹೆಚ್ಚಾಗಿ ಗುರುತಿಸಲಾಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ ಅಥವಾ ಸಾರ್ವಜನಿಕವಾಗಿ ಚರ್ಚಿಸಲಾಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಈ ಉಪನ್ಯಾಸದಲ್ಲಿ, ಪ್ರೊಫೆಸರ್ ಮೇರಿ ಇ. ಜಾನ್ ಅವರು ಭಾರತದಲ್ಲಿನ ಇತ್ತೀಚಿನ ಕುಟುಂಬ ನಿರ್ಮಾಣ ಪದ್ಧತಿಗಳನ್ನು ಪರಿಶೀಲಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ, ಇಂದಿನ ದಂಪತಿಗಳು ತಮ್ಮ ಕುಟುಂಬಗಳನ್ನು, ವಿಶೇಷವಾಗಿ ಲಿಂಗಕ್ಕೆ ಸಂಬಂಧಿಸಿದಂತೆ ಹೇಗೆ ಯೋಜಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ ಎಂಬುದರ ಮೇಲೆ ಕೇಂದ್ರೀಕರಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ.
ಈ ಉಪನ್ಯಾಸವನ್ನು ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್ನಲ್ಲಿ ನೀಡಲಾಗುವುದು, ನಂತರ ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಾರಾಂಶವನ್ನು ನೀಡಿ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೋತ್ತರದೊಂದಿಗೆ ಕೊನೆಗೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತದೆ.
ಈ ಉಪನ್ಯಾಸವನ್ನು ನಮ್ಮ ಸ್ಥಾಪಕ ಸದಸ್ಯೆ ಪೂರ್ಣಿಮಾ ವ್ಯಾಸುಲು ಅವರ ಸ್ಮರಣಾರ್ಥವಾಗಿ ನಡೆಸಲಾಗುತ್ತಿದೆ, ಈ ಸ್ಮಾರಕ ಉಪನ್ಯಾಸವು ಹಂಚಿಕೆಯ ಕಲಿಕೆ ಮತ್ತು ವಿಮರ್ಶಾತ್ಮಕ ಸಂವಾದಕ್ಕೆ ಒಂದು ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರವಾಗಿದೆ.
