Through this project, CBPS was involved in validating the Kalikayatna initiative – which was, at the time, a new approach to learning operating in lower and higher primary government schools in selected states across India. This initiative, which arose due to large scale absenteeism and non-enrollment in state schools, was the result of a collaboration between the NGO Prajayatna and Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan. In Kalikayatna, the emphasis was placed on ‘how’ children learn rather than on ‘what’ they learn.
The study also sought to examine the feasibility of expanding the same approach to all government schools in Karnataka. When this study was conducted, Prajayatna had been supporting the Kalikayatna initiative in both Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh.
