    The 2014 staff retreat was to Coonoor and nearby places. From 26th - 29th September the team, along with family members of staff, took a break to unwind and relax at a home-stay nestled in a tea-estate in Coonoor. A halt en-route for a safari at Bandipur, and in Ooty on the way back, made it all the more fun.

    Ms. Puja represented CBPS at a valuable networking opportunity to learn about ODL in other countries. The Annual General Meeting of Commonwealth Open Schooling Association (COMOSA) held in Dhaka, Bangladesh from September 30 to October 3, 2014 was organised by Commonwealth of Learning (COL), Vancouver. The meeting was preceded by workshops on The Big Picture Learning model as well as Theory of Change, During the meeting, the next six-year plan for each chapter (Asia, Africa, Pacific and Caribbean) was discussed and the COMOSA website was launched.     Mrs. Frances J. Ferreira, Education Specialist, Open Schooling, COL and Member, Advisory Committee of the ongoing CBPS study on Open & Distance Learning graciously accepted an invitation to interact with the study team on 24 September, during her visit to India. The interaction allowed for a stock-taking of the ground covered so far, and for vital inputs, clarifications and perspective to be gained.

    CBPS conducted an Orientation Programme on Urban Finances and Local Governance for Sri Lankan elected representatives of local governments and provincial councils. In connection to this, CBPS hosted a 20 member delegation from Sri Lanka from 14-21 September, in collaboration with The Asia Foundation, Colombo.

    Global Development Network announced the winners of its 2013 round of the Global Research Competition recently. The competition received over 131 cross-country/inter-regional team applications. After a highly competitive selection process, Mr. Sambhu Singh Rathi and Dr. Claire Vermaak of South Africa were jointly awarded the grant in the thematic area Inclusive and Sustainable Growth for their proposed research on The impacts of rural electrification on labour market outcomes in developing countries: Evidence from India and South Africa.

    CBPS, with funding from MacArthur Foundation, has initiated a three-year study on Open and Distance Learning. The research study examines ODL as a viable alternative in secondary education. It seeks to provide information on present gaps and the desired future actions for ODL. The first Advisory Committee Meeting held on 26 June 2014 in Bangalore witnessed discussion of a framework for desk review and analysis of secondary data besides planning for the next phase.     CBPS has collaborated with National University for Education Planning and Administration (NUEPA) to conduct a study on Working Conditions of Teachers in Karnataka. It is part of a 10-state study. A closed-group discussion workshop to present the initial findings and suggestions was organised on 26 June 2014 in Bangalore.The research covers government school teachers at the elementary and secondary levels. Government officials and representatives from the World Bank (technical partner for this study), NUEPA, Azim Premji University and Foundation, and other NGOs attended.
